gArtists, scientists, poets, and writers of the European Renaissance searched for new ideas, taking a renewed interest in neglected arts, languages, and sciences. They chose to study the original texts of the classical writers, rather than their interpretations. Even Christian clerics began asking themselves questions about God and his relation to humankind. This work by the Venetian artist Vittore Carpaccio (c.1455-1522), ºSaint Augustine in his studyº, is a perfect illustration of the humanist Renaissance ideal, which sought to reconcile the Christian faith and the knowledge of nature. The philosopher, clearly inspired by God, is surrounded by scientific works and instruments.
